Evansville, Indiana witnessed multiple arrests over the weekend related to drunk driving incidents, showcasing a pattern of dangerous behavior on local roads.

On Saturday night, 48-year-old Albert Spencer was apprehended for driving under the influence after he drove through a construction area on the city’s westside, striking numerous construction cones. During the incident, one of the cones became wedged underneath his truck while he continued to navigate the road. A deputy found Spencer parked on the shoulder of University Parkway, just south of Upper Mount Vernon Road. Officers reported that Spencer exhibited clear signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and a notable odor of alcohol. A breath test revealed his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was .211, significantly above the legal limit. Spencer’s driver’s license was also expired at the time of his arrest. He faces several charges, including driving while intoxicated, endangerment, and operating a vehicle with a BAC of .15 or more. Spencer is currently held on a $1,000 bond.

Earlier that same day, another incident unfolded involving a 25-year-old Evansville man who was arrested after crashing into a vehicle on Powell Avenue near South Grand Avenue, around noon. When emergency responders arrived, they found a woman trapped inside her vehicle. Initially, the other driver fled the scene but returned shortly thereafter. Officers observed the driver showing signs of impairment, such as glazed eyes and slurred speech. Upon inspection, several empty beer cans were discovered within his vehicle. The driver has been booked at Vanderburgh County Jail on preliminary charges for operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an injury crash, with a bond set at $2,000. As of this writing, the condition of the injured female driver remains unspecified.

In a separate incident on the same day, 51-year-old Howard Lane Jr. was arrested after crashing into a dumpster while attempting to leave a bar parking lot on N Fulton Avenue. Officers noted Lane’s erratic driving behavior, observing his vehicle’s turn signals being switched on and off even while stationary. As law enforcement approached, Lane reversed his vehicle into a dumpster and attempted to flee despite being urged to stop by officers. A patrol car was subsequently used to block Lane’s vehicle, preventing his escape. He displayed noticeable signs of intoxication and later registered a BAC of .159 at the Vanderburgh County Jail. Lane faces charges of driving while intoxicated and operating a motor vehicle with an ACE of .15 or more.

Additionally, the Evansville police department expressed gratitude to a “good Samaritan” who took action to stop another potentially deadly drunk driver on Saturday. This alarming incident occurred at around 3:43 p.m. when multiple reports about a driver displaying erratic behavior came in. The good Samaritan removed the keys from the ignition of the vehicle, preventing an imminent collision. The male driver, who displayed visible signs of impairment, was taken into custody soon after. He was subsequently hospitalized overnight due to the dangerous level of intoxication indicated by a BAC of .40. The driver faces preliminary charges for operating while intoxicated with a prior conviction and operating a vehicle without ever having obtained a driver’s license. His identity has not been released by the police.

The series of incidents serves as a reminder of the continuous dangers posed by drunk driving. Authorities urge community members to remain vigilant and to report any suspected instances of impaired driving to local law enforcement.
