Vestavia Hills – The Vestavia Hills City Council has authorized the hiring of Doster Construction as the construction manager for an extensive $30 million project focused on enhancing facilities at the Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex. This initiative aims to develop various new athletic and infrastructure projects in Liberty Park over the next two to three years, as outlined by City Manager Jeff Downes.
The array of planned facilities includes a new satellite library along Sweeney Hollow Road, a dedicated police operations building, and a public works and park maintenance building. Alongside these major developments, additional plans involve the renovation and expansion of Fire Station No. 4, demolition of the existing park maintenance building near the Liberty Park softball fields, and the reconfiguration of the softball park’s back entrance. A new access road will also be constructed to service the additions of the library, police, and maintenance buildings.
In addition to the large-scale projects, Doster Construction will manage the installation of a pool heater at the Vestavia Hills Aquatic Complex, located in Wald Park. To ensure financial feasibility, the extensive construction activities will be staggered, spreading out costs over the project timeline. The commencement of the fire station expansion, pool heater installation, and access road construction is projected for fiscal 2026, while the police facility, satellite library, maintenance building, and new softball field entrance are expected to begin in fiscal 2027.
Doster Construction was selected from a competitive pool of six companies, receiving 1.75% of the overall construction cost—estimated to total around $535,000. In addition, the company will earn a minimum of $15,512 per month during the pre-construction phase, alongside billing rates for personnel supervision during the construction processes.
Mayor Ashley Curry highlighted confidence in Doster’s competitive pricing and quality of personnel to oversee the forthcoming projects. This optimistic outlook is bolstered by Doster’s established reputation within the industry.
In conjunction with these developments, a separate project focused on constructing a pedestrian bridge over Highway 31 is currently underway, which aims to enhance access and safety by connecting Wald Park and the city’s public library. This project carries an expense of approximately $3.2 million, with 80% of the cost covered by the Alabama Department of Transportation.
Meanwhile, the Massey Road project, which involves the addition of a 5-foot-wide sidewalk and repaving of the roadway, has faced unforeseen delays due to the discovery of an unmarked water main. Despite these setbacks, completion of the Massey Road improvements is expected by the summer season.
The financial allocations and project timelines reflect the city’s commitment to enhancing community infrastructure and recreational facilities. As Vestavia Hills continues to grow, these new projects are aimed at improving quality of life for residents by providing state-of-the-art athletic and public works facilities.
