The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has announced that it will present a concert performance of Verdi’s Aida on June 13, 2025, under the direction of its current music director, Jonathon Heyward, whose contract has been extended by three years. This extension follows a series of record growth and historic milestones achieved by the BSO since Heyward’s arrival in 2023.

The BSO’s recent closing concert featured a powerful rendition of Aida at the Music Center at Strathmore, marking the second occasion the orchestra has performed this opera since Heyward took the helm. The performance is part of Heyward’s initiative to include a concert rendition of a Verdi opera each season, reflecting his commitment to expanding the orchestra’s repertoire.

The concert showcased an impressive lineup of soloists. Soprano Angel Blue headlined the performance in the title role of Aida, receiving notable acclaim for her powerful soprano range and exemplary control, particularly highlighted in the aria “O patria mia.” Tenor Limmie Pulliam, who made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2022, portrayed Radamès, delivering a strong interpretation of “Celeste Aida.” Mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton’s performance as Amneris garnered praise for its emotional depth and vocal strength. Baritone Reginald Smith, Jr. portrayed Amonasro, earning recognition for the emotional intensity present in his duet with Aida. However, bass Mark S. Doss’s portrayal of Ramfis faced criticism due to a perceived lack of vocal strength, particularly during his interactions with the male chorus.

The concert also featured thrilling instrumental segments, including a powerful Triumphal March, which was enhanced by off-stage trumpeters. Throughout the performance, Jonathon Heyward was noted for effectively coordinating both the singers and the orchestra. However, some concerns were raised regarding the overall choral sound, suggesting it did not match the quality of previous productions by the Maryland Lyric Opera.

The BSO is gearing up for its 2025-2026 subscription season, set to commence on September 26, 2025. A significant addition to this season is the newly appointed Jiannan Cheng, who will serve as the BSO’s Assistant Conductor. Cheng is set to take over from Jonathon Taylor Rush and will lead selected family, education, and holiday performances while also covering classical subscription programs. Cheng is expected to debut with the BSO on November 19, 2025, during a complimentary concert at Johns Hopkins University.

In addition to Cheng’s appointment, the BSO has introduced a new program aimed at nurturing conducting talent. Tatiana Pérez-Hernández has been welcomed as the inaugural Conducting Fellow, marking a significant step in the BSO’s efforts to foster the next generation of conductors.

The BSO’s efforts to expand its reach and enhance its offerings under Jonathon Heyward’s leadership continue to position the organization as a leading cultural institution in Baltimore, dedicated to providing high-quality performances and educational opportunities for the community.
