The water troubles stem from a decision made by the Ardmore, Alabama water department to remove Ardmore Water from their system. This action was prompted by tank issues, which occurred during repair efforts. As a result, the city of Ardmore is currently experiencing low water pressure, prompting authorities to request residents to conserve water.
To assist residents with their water needs, Ardmore Fire & Rescue is providing drinking water and water for flushing at their station located at 26704 Main Street. Additionally, the entire town remains under a “No Burn” order due to the limitations on water supply.
The water department is actively collaborating with Limestone County to resolve these issues. Although wells are pumping, they have reported that water pressure remains low across the area. The situation was exacerbated when a valve broke during repair work on a water line in Ardmore on Friday morning, close to the beginning of the school day, leading to a disruption of service for both Ardmore High School and Middle School.
Incidentally, the valve malfunction occurred just minutes before the first period bell at around 7:36 a.m. Attempts to repair the valve resulted in it breaking closed, which interrupted water flow to the schools. As a result of the lack of running water, school administrators made the decision to dismiss classes at 9 a.m., as essential services like restroom facilities and food service were unavailable.
Fortunately, water flow was restored to the affected schools by 10:30 a.m. after the valve was repaired. However, this restoration was too late to prevent the cancellation of classes for the following day. Both Ardmore High School and Cedar Hill Elementary are now preparing for a day without students while the water situation continues to be monitored and assessed.
The current water crisis in Ardmore underlines the critical need for ongoing maintenance and prompt action when dealing with municipal water systems.
