News Summary

The Greene Turtle sports bar in Towson, Maryland, is set to close by year’s end after facing significant issues following its popular ‘Thirsty Thursday’ events. Opened in 2022, the bar has struggled with financial losses, community disturbances, and a suspended liquor license. Following a police citation for serving an underage patron, local leaders express mixed feelings about the closure, debating the impact of the bar on community safety and nightlife.

Towson, Maryland – The Greene Turtle sports bar in Towson is slated to close by the end of the year, following a series of issues related to its popular “Thirsty Thursday” events. Opened in 2022, the bar was initially a significant investment, costing $4 million to establish, making it the most expensive and short-lived project in the Greene Turtle’s 50-year history.

The decision to shut its doors comes after the bar suspended its “Thirsty Thursday” promotions due to disturbances that erupted after a visit from Baltimore County Police on August 14. This visit resulted in the bar being cited for serving an underage cadet, leading to community disruptions that forced the establishment to stop its promotions and reduce drink specials.

Following the halt of these promotions, the Greene Turtle experienced a dramatic decline in revenue. It is estimated that the bar lost around $600,000 annually, with sales plummeting to only a quarter of their regular figures by the end of September.

On August 14, police noted that around 800 patrons were lining up outside the Greene Turtle, creating a chaotic scene where fights broke out, necessitating the calling of police backup. Violence continued to be a concern with eight arrests made on August 28 due to another disturbance linked to the bar.

In response to these incidents, the Baltimore County Police Department increased its presence in the area and began issuing citations for open containers and additional infractions. As a result of the violations on August 14, the Greene Turtle is facing a $1,000 fine and had its liquor license suspended on Thursdays through October.

Aaron Brave, a bar owner in the area, criticized the Greene Turtle’s influence on the local community, suggesting that it attracted visitors from outside Towson and contributed to ongoing issues within the neighborhood. Concerns about maintaining order and safety have prompted community members to express mixed feelings regarding the bar’s impending closure: some are disheartened by the decision, while others believe it is necessary to restore local safety and order.

Geo Concepcion, the CEO of Greene Turtle, stated that financial struggles left the establishment unable to continue its operations. Meanwhile, the bar’s attorney contended that the Greene Turtle should not be held liable for actions occurring in public spaces outside its control. Susan Green, chairwoman of the Baltimore County Liquor Board, indicated that the operators took on a property that proved too large for adequate management, asserting that their business practices have harmed the surrounding community.

The Greene Turtle’s closure marks the end of a significant chapter in its brief history, raising questions about the future of nightlife in Towson and the balance between business interests and community safety.
