Vancouver, WA – Evergreen Public Schools will remain closed on Monday due to an ongoing strike by the Public School Employees (PSE) Large Group classified union. This marks the second consecutive Monday that classes have been canceled, impacting thousands of students in the area.

Although school buildings will be closed, the Administrative Service Center will operate on a normal schedule from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The strike persists as no agreement was reached between the district and the union during negotiations over the weekend.

Union members are continuing their picketing efforts daily from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the District Office located at 13413 N.E. LeRoy Haagen Memorial Drive in Vancouver. The union disputes the district’s claim that they “walked away from bargaining,” asserting that the district requested to end negotiations after the Evergreen PSE made five proposals, to which the district only provided one counteroffer.

Mindy Troffer-Cooper, President of Evergreen PSE, has highlighted the union’s commitment to negotiating in good faith, emphasizing that their efforts are not against students but rather for their benefit. The district’s bargaining teams had meetings on Friday and Saturday and are scheduled to reconvene on Monday morning in hopes of reaching a fair and sustainable agreement amidst current budget conditions.

During the duration of the strike, the district has announced that free meals will be provided to students at two high schools. Meals will be served at Heritage High School from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and at Mountain View High School from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Additionally, child care options have been expanded, with Right at School operating Family Care Camps at nine elementary schools from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Clark County Family YMCA offering camps for district students from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Despite the strike, middle and high school athletics and activities will continue; however, the district will not be providing transportation for these events. Families are expected to receive updated schedules and details about locations directly from their respective schools.

The strike began on August 22, coinciding with the students’ scheduled return to school, creating challenges for parents in terms of child care and meal planning. Just last Friday, the Evergreen Public Schools Board of Directors voted unanimously to authorize legal action against the striking workers, labeling the strike as “unlawful.” The union had previously rejected the district’s “final offer” in a vote conducted on Thursday prior to the latest negotiations.

The situation continues to develop, and both the district and the union remain committed to finding a resolution that addresses the needs of students while also considering the financial constraints under which the district operates.
