Building Collapse during Demolition Disrupts Traffic on Main Street in Hopkinton
Hopkinton, Massachusetts – A building collapse during a demolition project caused significant traffic disruption on Main Street around 2:43 p.m. on Wednesday. The incident took place at the former Hopkinton Drug building, located at 52 Main Street, where part of the structure unexpectedly fell, spilling debris onto the sidewalk and roadway.
Emergency personnel were alerted to the scene, responding quickly to manage the traffic situation and ensure public safety. Hopkinton police issued advisories to drivers, urging them to find alternative routes as the collapse had closed one westbound lane of Main Street until debris was cleared. This disruption was particularly notable given the timing coincided with the dismissal of local high and middle schools, leading to heavy foot traffic in the area.
Images from the scene depict a partially collapsed building, with debris scattered across both the roadway and bordering fence. The south-facing wall of the building had fallen, bringing down at least one street sign and a pedestrian walk signal at the nearby Cedar Street intersection.
Emergency crews employed specialized video and audio equipment to search for any potential victims beneath the rubble. Fortunately, it was confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. The fast response ensured public safety while managing the aftermath of the collapse.
One lane of Main Street reopened around 4:30 p.m. after the collapsed wall was moved back onto the construction site. This allowed traffic to resume slowly as workers continued to manage the site and surrounding area. Town officials announced that the construction company responsible for the demolition would be held accountable for the damage inflicted on municipal property.
The demolition work had commenced earlier that day, beginning just before 9 a.m., with crews focused on dismantling the northern side of the building which is adjacent to a parking lot. In preparation for the demolition, a barrier fence and water socks were set up around the property in early August.
Boston-based Parsons Commercial Group and Brendon Properties are overseeing the redevelopment of the site into a multifamily mixed-use development, with the demolition permit for this project having been granted on July 17. The project is anticipated to take approximately 16 to 18 months to complete, after which new residential and commercial spaces will be available in the area.
This incident is still developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
