Major Road Closures Planned for Train Track Repairs

News Summary

West Palm Beach residents face significant road closures as CSX initiates repairs on deteriorating train tracks at a major intersection. The project, aimed at ensuring safety for both train operations and vehicle traffic, is expected to impact around 50,000 drivers during the school year. Detour routes have been provided to help navigate the closures, while lane reductions along Seminole Pratt Whitney Road and an upcoming closure of Northlake Boulevard are set to further complicate travel in the area. Updates and live traffic feeds will be available for residents throughout the project.

West Palm Beach, Florida – Major road closures and detours began on Monday as CSX undertakes necessary repairs on deteriorating train tracks at a prominent intersection, with the work expected to impact approximately 50,000 drivers throughout the school year.

The objective of the repair project is to complete all upgrades before classes commence on August 11, ensuring safety for both train operations and vehicle traffic. Senior project engineer Mel Pollock reported that significant progress has already been made, including demolition of the existing rail across the intersection over the weekend, and trains resumed service on the repaired tracks starting Saturday.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has indicated two primary detour routes for drivers to navigate the closures effectively:

  • Seminole Pratt Whitney Road to Orange, Okeechobee, or Southern Boulevards to connect to Military Trail.
  • Coconut Boulevard and 60th Street to reach Okeechobee Boulevard and then Military Trail.

Historically, approximately 30,000 drivers are affected by intersection closures in this area during this time of year, and that number surges to 50,000 when schools are in session. Pollock underscored the importance of meticulous planning and timely communication with the community, given the limited options for detours.

Concerns regarding the condition of the train tracks prompted CSX to initiate repairs, uncovering deterioration in the underlying railroad ties during routine inspections. These deteriorating conditions, combined with issues of differential settlement, posed significant safety risks for train operations. The project’s current timeline is on track to meet the scheduled deadline of August 10, just one day prior to the start of classes in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.

Separately, Northlake Boulevard is set to close at 8 p.m. on Friday for a period of nine days to facilitate further upgrades to the CSX rail crossing. This closure coincides with ongoing construction and detours at the Seminole Pratt Whitney intersection, likely leading to increased disruptions in the area.

In addition to these closures, the county is also implementing lane reductions and additional closures along Seminole Pratt Whitney Road for unrelated widening efforts. Residents have raised alarms about the potential for intensified traffic congestion and the impact on their daily commutes, with some fearing that detours may extend travel times to as much as two hours.

To assist with the impact of the closures, Palm Beach County officials have launched a dedicated web page to keep residents informed about road construction developments, offering live traffic camera feeds to monitor current conditions. Traffic engineers are actively working to adjust traffic light timings to mitigate congestion at critical intersections affected by the detours.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and various law enforcement agencies will collaborate to manage traffic flow and maintain order during the closures, addressing resident concerns about the anticipated delays. While frustrations have arisen among the local population, the ongoing construction is aimed at long-term improvements in the safety and efficiency of the county’s transportation infrastructure.
