Girona, Spain – The prestigious 2031 Ryder Cup will take place in Spain, as confirmed by the president of the Catalan Golf Federation, Ramon Nogué. The announcement comes just days before an official declaration is expected to confirm Girona as the host city for the iconic golfing tournament. The event will be held at the Camiral Golf and Wellness Resort, previously known as PGA Catalunya, marking a significant moment for Spanish golf.
This upcoming Ryder Cup will mark the second time Spain has hosted the event; the first was in 1997 at Valderrama Golf Club in Andalusia. The 1997 tournament was a historical milestone, as it became the first Ryder Cup held in continental Europe, where Europe narrowly triumphed over the United States with a score of 14½-13½. Spanish golfing legends such as Seve Ballesteros, José María Olazábal, and Sergio García are closely associated with the Ryder Cup, adding to the local significance of the event.
The Camiral Golf course has a solid reputation, having hosted various European Tour events, including the Spanish Open. The resort has been under the ownership of Irish businessman Denis O’Brien since 2008, who has invested substantially in renovations to enhance the courses and facilities at the resort. The Camiral Golf course is highly regarded and is currently ranked No. 3 in Spain according to Golf Digest’s Best Courses rankings.
The Ryder Cup is a biennial golf tournament that pits teams from Europe against the United States, fostering a spirit of competition and camaraderie among players from both continents. This year’s event is scheduled to take place at Bethpage Black in New York in September, while the next edition on European soil will be held in 2027 at Adare Manor in Ireland. Following the 2031 Ryder Cup in Spain, future tournaments are already lined up—one will be held at Hazeltine National in Minnesota in 2029, followed by the Olympic Club in San Francisco in 2033.
Announcements relating to future editions of the Ryder Cup, beyond those stipulated, will be communicated by Ryder Cup Europe in due course, offering golf fans an exciting prospect of events in various locations around the world.
With the upcoming 2031 Ryder Cup, Spain aims to showcase its rich golfing heritage and commitment to hosting high-profile international sports events, further solidifying its status within the global golfing community.
