Rhodes – The Mitsis Group has announced a substantial investment of €400 million aimed at transforming the Afantou Golf Course into a premier luxury destination on the island of Rhodes, Greece. This redevelopment plan is set to redefine tourism on the island by creating a world-class golfing experience alongside high-end leisure facilities.
The Afantou Golf Course is currently the only 18-hole golf course in Rhodes and was acquired by the Mitsis Group in 2022. The plan for improvement will preserve the intrinsic character of the existing course while expanding its area to over 500 stremma (approximately 123.7 acres). The modernization will not only enhance the aesthetics and playability of the course but will also incorporate sustainable architectural designs, fostering a green environment.
Key features of the refurbished golf course are projected to include lush fairways and scenic views, contributing to a rich golfing experience for visitors. In addition to the golf course, the plans encompass the construction of three luxury hotels specifically designed for high-end travelers, melding comfort and sophistication.
The development will also include a marina providing direct access to the Mediterranean Sea, effectively integrating maritime tourism into the larger development plan. Alongside the accommodations, a new shopping complex featuring designer boutiques and local artisanal shops will complement the luxurious hospitality offerings.
The Mitsis Group is keen to offer residential units designed for long-term stays, which aim to blend seamlessly with the resort’s overall architecture and surroundings. This initiative reflects Greece’s broader policy to diversify its tourism offerings by targeting luxury and sustainable tourism markets.
With the anticipated revitalization of the Afantou Golf Course and surrounding areas, significant benefits are expected for Rhodes, including job creation and enhanced infrastructure. The project is designed to make the island more economically and culturally attractive to high-end tourists from around the globe, aligning with a growing trend in the tourism sector.
The planned redevelopment is not just limited to golf and accommodation; it encompasses state-of-the-art infrastructure improvements such as new pedestrian routes, public squares, and recreational areas. These upgrades are aimed at ensuring that visitors enjoy a comprehensive and holistic experience, both during peak summer months and off-seasons, appealing to a broader range of tourists seeking both relaxation and adventure.
As a key player in the tourism industry in Greece, the Mitsis Group’s investment signifies a strong commitment to developing Rhodes into a elite destination while focusing on sustainability. The overall vision of this redevelopment is to position Rhodes as a European-standard luxury resort area, promoting a new chapter in the island’s tourism narrative.
The project is expected to enhance Rhodes’s standing as an exclusive tourism venue, fostering an influx of international travelers eager for unique and luxurious experiences. As plans progress, the anticipated outcomes reflect a new era of tourism that aims to synergize modernity with the rich cultural heritage of Rhodes, paving the way for sustainable growth in the region.
