Continuous Construction Projects Impacting Lufkin Residents

News Summary

Residents of Lufkin face mixed reactions to ongoing construction projects by the Texas Department of Transportation. While some support the improvements intended for road safety, others are frustrated by the immediate inconveniences, particularly concerning increased traffic on State Loop 287. Significant projects include widening roadways and bridge replacements designed to enhance safety standards. Despite these efforts, some projects have encountered delays, adding to the community’s concerns. A new recreation center also adds to the evolving landscape, aiming to provide family-friendly entertainment amidst construction chaos.

Lufkin – Ongoing construction projects by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in Lufkin have caused a stir among residents, drawing mixed reactions as community members weigh the long-term benefits against immediate inconveniences.

One resident, George Deckard, who has lived near State Loop 287 for the past eight years, expressed his support for the construction projects despite the current disruptions. Deckard highlighted that entering State Loop 287 from Southwood and Feagan has become increasingly dangerous due to traffic patterns, leading to numerous accidents. To avoid these dangers, he now opts for safer alternative routes, including nearby overpasses.

TxDOT has initiated the State Loop 287 Improvement Project to tackle these safety concerns by adding two lanes—one in each direction—between U.S. 59 and Copeland Street. The project also includes plans for resurfacing the road, which is expected to enhance safety and improve overall road quality. This significant 18-month construction initiative aims to make travel safer for Lufkin’s commuters.

In addition to the SL 287 project, another major construction project is less than 10 miles away on FM 324 (Southwood Drive). This project involves replacing an existing bridge over Hurricane Creek and building an additional bridge over train tracks. The goal is to widen the roadway to meet updated safety standards, ensuring improved access and safety for local drivers.

Tim Monzingo, TxDOT’s public information officer, acknowledged the initial increase in traffic and large trucks in Lufkin as a result of the construction projects. He urged drivers to remain patient and allow extra travel time while these critical infrastructure improvements are underway.

While several projects move forward, work on Gaslight Boulevard has been halted since late June due to unexpected subgrade issues and the need for revisions to the stormwater drainage system. The Gaslight Boulevard Rehabilitation Project intends to convert the road from four lanes to five while enhancing safety features for both drivers and pedestrians. Updates to streetlights and sidewalks are also part of this endeavor. City Engineer Chris Key has emphasized the necessity of resolving drainage issues before proceeding with further construction, and the project’s contractor, Langston Construction, is tasked with making the needed repairs. The initial estimated cost for improvements on Gaslight Boulevard was around $4 million, but this figure may be revised due to the additional work required.

Among the ongoing issues, a tragic incident in July in a construction zone on U.S. Highway 59 resulted in the death of pedestrian Nathaniel Jared Yinger, who was struck by a semi-truck after exiting his disabled vehicle. Investigations by the Texas Department of Public Safety and the local sheriff’s office are ongoing, with no charges expected against the truck driver involved in the incident.

Beyond road projects, Lufkin is also seeing developments in community facilities. Construction of a new family-friendly recreation center, named Rec and Relax, started in November 2024 and is set to feature arcade games and mini-golf. However, this project has faced delays primarily due to adverse weather conditions and requirements for building a detention pond. Owner Ty Shafer anticipates that the facility will be completed by September and aims to create a versatile entertainment space for families to enjoy.

As Lufkin continues to navigate these ongoing construction projects, residents express diverse opinions, balancing their immediate inconveniences with hopes for improved safety and community facilities in the future.
