This incident raises awareness regarding the potential dangers of excessive herbal supplement usage, particularly those with concentrated doses of active ingredients.
The woman began taking turmeric pills daily in March, following recommendations from an Instagram health influencer touting its benefits for inflammation and joint pain. However, within a few weeks, she experienced alarming symptoms including stomach pain, nausea, fatigue, and darkened urine. Upon seeking medical attention, tests revealed that her liver enzyme levels were an astonishing 70 times above the normal threshold, putting her at the brink of complete liver failure.
Given the seriousness of her condition, medical professionals indicated that she was at risk of requiring a liver transplant due to the significant damage caused by the turmeric supplements. Following hospitalization and treatment, her liver began to show signs of recovery after six days, shedding light on the severity of the situation.
Turmeric is derived from the root of the Curcuma longa plant, recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The active compound in turmeric, known as curcumin, is present in regular ground turmeric in only about 3% concentration. However, many turmeric supplements contain curcumin concentrations of up to 95%, leading to potential overconsumption if not monitored.
Generally, the World Health Organization recommends an acceptable daily dosage of turmeric at 0 to 3 mg per kilogram of body weight. For the individual in this case, her daily intake was an alarming 2,250 mg, significantly surpassing these recommended limits. Medical experts have warned that concentrated doses of turmeric can adversely affect liver health, particularly as individual tolerances to such supplements vary widely. The Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network has noted a concerning rise in liver damage cases linked to herbal supplements, with approximately 19% of such cases attributed to these products.
Symptoms associated with liver toxicity from supplements include yellow urine, abdominal heaviness, fatigue, and weakness. Individuals with pre-existing liver conditions, such as fatty liver disease or alcoholic liver disease, are particularly advised against turmeric supplements due to the heightened risk of drug-induced liver injury (DILI).
In addition, turmeric taken with black pepper can significantly increase its absorption, amplifying the potential risk of liver injury. Notably, cases of liver failure requiring transplants due to supplements rose eightfold in the USA between 1995 and 2020, underscoring the urgent need for awareness regarding herbal supplement consumption.
