Golfers Prepare for 3M Open After British Open Challenge

News Summary

Sam Burns and Wyndham Clark are set to compete in the PGA Tour’s 3M Open after a tough week at the British Open. Their travel schedule poses a significant recovery challenge as they transition from Northern Ireland to Minnesota. Both players made the cut at the British Open, but the physical demands of major championships often lead golfers to skip subsequent events. To aid in their recovery, they will likely rely on various recovery tools and practices before the tournament starts, which boasts a total purse of $8.4 million.

Blaine, Minnesota – Following a rigorous week at the British Open, golfers Sam Burns and Wyndham Clark are preparing to compete in the PGA Tour’s 3M Open, set to occur from July 25 to July 28 at TPC Twin Cities. Both players successfully made the cut at the prestigious British Open and now face the challenge of rapid recovery in order to perform at their best in Minnesota.

After concluding their play at Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland, Burns and Clark must drive approximately one hour to Belfast International Airport. They will then embark on a nearly nine-hour flight across six time zones to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, where they will land around 11 p.m. local time. This tight travel schedule means that their bodies will still feel as if it is 5 a.m. the following day, adding significant physical strain following an exhausting tournament.

The physical demands of major championships often lead many professional golfers to skip the 3M Open, particularly those who are not chasing points for the FedEx Cup. Instead, they focus on recovery and downtime to restore their bodies. For Burns and Clark, who are participating in the event, recovery will be a critical aspect of their preparation.

To aid in recovery, many players utilize tools such as Normatec 3 leggings, known as compression boots, available at a cost of $899. These devices inflate and deflate, helping to flush fluid out of the legs after strenuous rounds or workouts, thereby reducing lactic acid and other metabolic waste. Players might also use these recovery boots before workouts to promote circulation and enhance their recovery efforts. Hyperice, the manufacturer of Normatec products, also offers a tubeless version of the boots, the Normatec Elite, priced at $1,099.

In 2020, the PGA Tour entered into a partnership with Hyperice to provide players with recovery equipment that includes percussive therapy devices, commonly known as therapy guns. These devices help increase blood flow, reduce stiffness, and ease recovery from the strains of continuous play. The Hypervolt Go 2 is a lightweight therapy gun costing $139 with a long-lasting battery, while the more powerful Hypervolt 2 is priced at $229 and comes with multiple attachments.

The conditions during travel can also hinder player recovery. Airplane cabins typically have low humidity and pressure, which can accelerate moisture loss from the body. Consuming processed snacks during flights may lead to stiffness and inflammation post-travel. Although many elite golfers have personal chefs, PGA Tour players have access to on-site nutritionists who advise them on hydration and the consumption of anti-inflammatory foods, such as leafy greens, fatty fish, berries, and nuts, all of which can facilitate recovery after a demanding tournament or long journey.

In addition to proper nutrition, light exercise upon arrival is recommended as an effective recovery strategy, as suggested by player Jon Rahm. Incorporating stretching or engaging in light workouts can improve circulation and help mititgate symptoms of jet lag. Staying hydrated, keeping the body moving, and making smart dietary choices are universally beneficial recovery strategies for all athletes, regardless of their access to specialized resources.

The total purse for this year’s 3M Open is set at $8.4 million, with the winner receiving $1.512 million. Notable golfers expected to compete include Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott, and defending champion Jhonattan Vegas. As an added attraction, fans attending the tournament can look forward to a concert featuring country music star Lee Brice after Saturday’s round. Following the initial rounds, the tournament will cut the 156-player field to the low 60 scores and ties for the final rounds.
