The Giles County Public School System has announced a 15-day delay to the start of the academic year due to ongoing renovations. New students’ first day will be September 2, ensuring improvements to facilities and safety measures are completed. The decision, made by Superintendent Marlin Campbell, aims to provide a safe returning environment for students and staff. Though initial plans included virtual learning, in-person instruction will now commence later. The delay will not affect extracurricular activities, and food delivery services for students in need will continue during this period.
Giles County, Virginia – The Giles County Public School System has announced that the start of the 2025-26 academic year will be delayed by 15 days due to ongoing renovations at school facilities. This change pushes the new start date for students to September 2, 2025, from the previously scheduled August 18, 2025.
Superintendent Marlin Campbell indicated that this decision was driven by a commitment to ensuring a safe and comfortable return to school for students, teachers, and staff. The beginning of the academic year is a significant event that brings excitement to children, parents, and teachers alike, highlighting the district’s focus on a positive start.
Initially, the district considered beginning the academic year with virtual learning as a contingency plan but ultimately chose to implement a delayed in-person opening instead. As a result of the revised academic calendar, the school district will add an additional food delivery day for students in need. These food delivery days have been ongoing throughout the summer, ensuring that families have access to essential meals during the break.
Importantly, this change in the academic schedule will not impact extracurricular activities or sporting events that have already been scheduled. School officials have confirmed that the delayed start will not lead to an extension of the school year, though they are exploring alternative measures to meet learning requirements effectively.
