Memphis – Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) has officially broken ground on the new Frayser Community High School, a landmark project aimed at enhancing educational facilities in the Frayser community. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 1, 2025, at 1530 Dellwood Avenue, the location of the former MLK Prep High School, which was demolished in 2024 to pave the way for the new educational structure.
The new Frayser Community High School is set to cover approximately 270,000 square feet and will accommodate around 1,500 students. This substantial initiative is projected to cost close to $112 million, with nearly $34 million of that figure being supplied by Shelby County, allowing the construction timeline to accelerate earlier than initially planned.
The Frayser Community High School is designed to replace Trezevant High School as part of a broader community revitalization effort aimed at providing modern educational facilities that meet contemporary needs. The first phase of construction will feature a new three-story building, a gymnasium, renovated auditorium, and various athletic facilities, all designed to foster a conducive learning environment.
Plans for the project also include a second phase, which will introduce a specialized center for career and technology education, a creative and fine arts center, an auxiliary gym, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) labs, and an expanded auditorium, further enhancing the educational resources available to students.
The goal is to have the new high school operational by the year 2027, aligning with the increased focus on creating state-of-the-art educational spaces that are safe and suited to current learning methodologies. This project is part of the Achievement School District initiatives, which aim to address educational disparities and improve the quality of education in the Frayser area.
City officials, including Mayor Lee Harris, have emphasized the importance of modern educational environments, noting that these facilities are essential for the success and well-being of students. Acknowledging the long-overdue need for improvements, local education leaders, including Trezevant High School’s Principal Eric Brent, are supportive of these new developments which aim to foster a better learning atmosphere for students.
Overall, the construction of the Frayser Community High School not only aims to meet the current educational demands but also represents a significant investment in the future of the Frayser community. By providing up-to-date facilities equipped with advanced technology and diverse educational programs, the school project is designed to cultivate a generation of learners who are prepared for a rapidly evolving world.
The education community eagerly anticipates the progress of this project, recognizing the positive impact it will have on students and families in Frayser. As the construction moves forward, it is expected to bring renewed hope and opportunities for youth in the area, underscoring the commitment to improving education standards across the Memphis-Shelby County region.
