Brainerd, Minnesota – Cragun’s Resort, a well-known destination on Gull Lake, has officially changed ownership after 85 years, now under the management of Leisure Hotels and Resorts, helmed by Jaime Tatge. This landmark transaction is recognized as the largest resort sale in Minnesota’s history and was finalized on April 1, 2024. Cragun’s Resort boasts 206 lodge-style rooms, 55 cabins, five dining options, and three golf courses, all set amid more than 800 acres of land featuring a mile of beautiful shoreline. The venue includes a spacious 50,000 square feet dedicated to meeting and event space, which makes it a popular choice for both families and corporate gatherings. Over the years, Cragun’s has seen a range of upgrades, including an extensive $25 million remodel completed in 2015 that enhanced various aspects of the resort’s offerings.
Jaime Tatge, who has been with Leisure Hotels and Resorts since 2007, brings over 25 years of expertise in hospitality and resort management to the new role. Under his leadership, the company plans to embark on a redevelopment project centered on the cabins located on the south side of Steamboat Bay. The renovations, aimed at modernizing the facilities, are scheduled for completion by fall 2025. This initiative will focus not only on updating the cabins but also on enhancing food and beverage selections as well as improving the overall guest experience.
The transition in ownership prioritizes retention of the existing staff, ensuring continuity in service quality for returning guests. Eric Peterson, who has held the position of general manager for 14 years at Cragun’s, will remain in his role, offering his experience and knowledge of the resort to the new owners. This step reflects the commitment to maintaining a strong connection to the resort’s heritage while also introducing enhancements that align with modern expectations.
Historically, Cragun’s Resort originated during the Great Depression, established by Dutch Cragun’s parents. Over the decades, it has become a cherished location for visitors, known for its appeal among families and conference groups alike. The new ownership is keen on honoring the legacy of the Cragun family, emphasizing a commitment to preserve the resort’s historical significance while simultaneously upgrading its amenities and services for future guests.
As part of the new plans, the management team at Leisure Hotels and Resorts will foster collaboration with the existing staff, ensuring that the values and service standards that have characterized Cragun’s for many years will continue to thrive.
