Cragun’s Resort, Golf and Conference in Brainerd, Minnesota, has completed a multi-year renovation of its golf course, which now features all 45 holes available for both resort guests and public play. The ceremonial unveiling of the final nine holes, known as Dutch Red, was conducted by PGA TOUR Champions player and course architect Tom Lehman. The enhancements aimed to improve playability and enjoyment for golfers of all skill levels.
The renovation of Dutch Red includes significant improvements such as new striking bunkering, four redesigned greens, and refreshed green surrounds. Although the course routing remains unchanged, extensive reshaping and clearing have improved scenic views, elevating the golfing experience. Notable enhancements on hole #3 include nearly doubling the fairway landing area and relocating the green 50 yards back, designed to provide a softer chipping area around it. Hole #4 has been transformed into a drivable par 4, with bunkers and the cart path relocated for improved playability.
The grand opening attracted attention from representatives of Leisure Hotels & Resorts, the new owners of the resort, along with media members. This renovation signifies a new chapter for golf in the Upper Midwest, as Cragun’s Resort prepares to host the CRMC Championship from August 28-31, where the renovated layouts of the Red and White courses will showcase the developments. The championship has seen past notable winners, such as Jake Knapp (2022), Yi Cao (2023), and Frederik Kjettrup (2024).
Established in 1940, Cragun’s Resort has long been a vital component of the Brainerd Lakes community, drawing thousands of visitors each year. The recent sale of the resort to Baxter-based Leisure Hotels & Resorts marks the largest resort transaction in Minnesota history. The new ownership assures that there will be no immediate changes to the current staff and leadership team, which aims to maintain continuity in operations and uphold the resort’s storied legacy.
Looking ahead, the new owners plan to invest further in the facility through 2025 to enhance offerings and improve guest experiences. Cragun’s Resort features 206 lodge-style rooms, 55 cabins, and seven homes, offering various dining options and multiple golf courses. With more than 400 employees and substantial meeting spaces for events and conferences, the resort continues to expand its role in Minnesota’s tourism landscape.
Cragun’s Resort underwent a significant $25 million remodel and expansion in 2015. The completion of the Dutch Red golf course renovation adds another layer to the resort’s offerings and aligns with its commitment to providing exceptional recreational experiences. As Cragun’s continues to welcome guests to its scenic grounds, the future looks bright for golf enthusiasts and visitors alike.
