A tragic accident occurred on I-95 in Greenwich when Traymont Tucker, a construction worker, was hit by a vehicle while working in a construction zone. The incident took place in the early hours, leading to his immediate death at the scene. The driver, Osvaldo Vela, suffered minor injuries. Greenwich—Traymont Tucker, a 38-year-old construction worker from Waterbury, was fatally struck by a vehicle on I-95 early Saturday morning as he was working within a designated construction zone. The tragic incident occurred around 2:25 a.m. on the northbound side of I-95, just south of exit 3, where the left travel lane was closed due to active construction.
The vehicle involved in the collision was a black Dodge Durango, operated by 38-year-old Osvaldo Vela from Yonkers, New York. Tucker was pronounced dead at the scene by Greenwich Emergency Medical Services at approximately 3 a.m. Vela, the driver, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Stamford Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Authorities responded to the accident scene, including state police, the Greenwich Fire Department, and representatives from the state’s Department of Transportation. In the wake of the incident, I-95 northbound was temporarily shut down to facilitate a thorough investigation, reopening just before 10 a.m. No charges have been filed against Vela as the investigation is ongoing.
Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto has extended condolences to Tucker’s family in light of this tragic event. He also highlighted the dangers faced by highway construction workers, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance from drivers when approaching construction zones. The Commissioner underscored the critical importance of the “Slow Down, Move Over” law, which mandates that drivers reduce speed and provide additional space to vehicles and personnel working on the highways.
Tucker was associated with local laborers’ union Local 146, which expressed its grief over the incident and offered heartfelt condolences to Tucker’s family, friends, and coworkers.
