AISD Proposes Closure of 13 Schools Amid Budget Crisis

Community gathering about Austin ISD school closures

News Summary

The Austin Independent School District has unveiled a proposal to close 13 schools due to a $19.7 million budget deficit and declining enrollment. If approved, closures will take place starting in the 2026-27 academic year, impacting elementary, middle, and high school programs. The plan includes redrawing attendance boundaries and facilitating community workshops to gather feedback on the proposal. AISD officials emphasize that these changes are necessary to adapt to budgetary constraints and ongoing underfunding, aiming to shape a sustainable educational framework for the district’s students.

Austin – The Austin Independent School District (AISD) administration has released a draft proposal to close 13 schools within the district, contingent upon approval by the school board on November 20. The closures are set to begin in the 2026-27 academic year as a response to a substantial budget deficit and declining student enrollment.

The proposed closures encompass 10 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and one high school program. The elementary schools slated for closure are Barrington ES, Becker ES, Bryker Woods ES, Dawson ES, Maplewood ES, Oak Springs ES, Palm ES, Ridgetop ES, Sunset Valley ES, and Widén ES. The middle schools involved are Bedicheck MS and Martin MS, with Martin MS designated for temporary closure. Additionally, the International HS program will be closed but will continue to operate as a program at Navarro Early College High School.

This drastic measure is part of AISD’s response to a mandate from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), which requires the closure or leadership changes for 23 poorly performing schools. The urgency of the closures is compounded by AISD’s current budget shortfall of $19.7 million and a noticeable decrease in student enrollment, which has fallen from 84,000 in 2015 to 70,000 today.

If approved, the closures are expected to save the district approximately $25.6 million. Furthermore, 98% of AISD schools will face significant redrawing of attendance boundaries, affecting more than 16,000 students. Families can utilize an interactive online tool to determine updated neighborhood school assignments based on their home addresses, while a grandfathering process will allow students to remain at their current schools until they complete their final grade level at those institutions.

To facilitate community involvement and discussion, AISD plans to host workshops on October 14, October 16, October 27, and November 8. These events will allow stakeholders to voice their feedback regarding the draft proposal. The board president, Lynn Boswell, acknowledged the emotional impact the proposed changes will have on families, emphasizing the need for sensitivity in managing this transition.

The schools under consideration for closure are located in various regions across Austin and serve a significant number of low-income students. The AISD administration has indicated that the plan includes relocating dual language programs and other educational services to different campuses to continue supporting affected students.

District officials point to chronic underfunding and the evolving educational landscape as significant factors necessitating these radical changes. Stakeholders have raised concerns about the communication surrounding the proposal and the practical implementation of the transition, stressing the need for clarity and support throughout the process.

Austin ISD Superintendent Matias Segura has highlighted the importance of adapting to the changing demands of education to better meet student needs and enhance educational outcomes. The future of these school closures will not only affect the district’s financial health but also shape the educational landscape for thousands of students in Austin.
